Fluorescent signs bespeckle rural byways in March warning that the earth is shifting; prohibiting heavy loads from passing during this transition from wintry to warmer weather.  For many, it is not only our geological underpinnings that feel unsettled.  The poet Kate Light puts it this way: There comes the strangest moment in your life / when everything you thought breaks free / what you relied upon, as ground-rule and rite / looks upside down from how it used to be”  This all occurs, coincidentally, during the Christian season of Lent and, this year, the beginning of Ramadan, the Muslim month of fasting and reflection.  These days of thaw, before the glorious awakenings of April and May, invite introspection – a chance to pause and examine past failings and to consider how we might chart a new course for the coming spring.
