In this sermon I’ll expand on some of what I shared my last time in Sanford. In Dr. Steven Hahn’s book Illiberal America he points out that there have been essentially two American stories playing out since the earliest days of our nation. One has been the continuing attempts to basically expand our understanding of “We the people” by securing the rights of ever-increasing segments the citizenry: Women, persons of color, LBTQ folk, as well as matters like working conditions, environmental concerns, etc. Then there is what Hahn calls “Illiberal America” which was and is largely the various kinds of resistance to such movements. What I’ll do this Sunday is look at the role religion in America has played in each of these stories; and how I see all of that leading into the upcoming election.
