This sermon has to do with how we maintain a basic stance of gratitude towards life and living even in difficult times. In the aftermath of the presidential election we now have a sense of just how difficult those times are and will be. I’ll use a line from Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s poem “The World is a Beautiful Place.” He writes of the many wonderful things the world can give us, and then has this line: “The world is a beautiful place to be born into if you don’t mind happiness not always being too much fun. If you don’t mind a touch of hell now and then just when everything is fine, because even in heaven they don’t sing all the time.”
