As you know, many Christian denominations observe, before Easter, a 40-day period of fasting and devotions called Lent, a word that refers to the “lengthening” of days as winter turns to spring. Many religions, especially the three Abrahamic faiths – Judaism, Christianity and Islam – include, at different times of the year, the practice of fasting, prayer, and increased giving of alms. Whether or not one observes Lent, or has memories of doing so in the past, this service by Tom Putnam, titled Inquire Within, will consider why this “shoulder season” at winter’s end is an apt time for spiritual reflection and for offering one’s gifts to the wider world.
