As the nation prepares to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the battles of Lexington and Concord, this service, The Fate of the Nation, will focus on the role Henry Wadsworth Longfellow played in resuscitating the story of the midnight ride of Paul Revere. When Revere died in 1818 his role in the events of April 19, 1775 was not even mentioned in his obituary. Some 80 years later, Longfellow used Revere’s story to inspire the citizens of his time on behalf of the abolitionist cause in the months preceding the Civil War. One line of the poem reads: That was all! And yet, through the gloom and the light / The fate of a nation was riding that night. As we all know, much is riding on our backs about the current fate of our nation. What lessons might we take from the inspiring examples of Longfellow and Revere?
